Subaru Model Overview

Which Subaru is best for me?

Four minute video summary of the Subaru model line-up

The 2015 Outback, a "midsize crossover," offers the room and capability of a traditional sport ute but rides on a car chassis (instead of a truck frame).  It is longer and wider than Impreza and Forester, though the Forester is slightly taller. (See a complete comparison between Forester and Outback).  With 2.5 liter four cylinder, Outback boasts 33 mpg highway. It is also available with a 3.6 liter six cylinder engine.  Priced from the mid $20s to the low $30's.

The 2015 Forester, a "compact crossover," shares a chassis with the Crosstrek, but is a little taller, wider, and longer.  Foresters gets 32mpg highway, and is also available with a turbocharged engine.  Priced from the low $20s to the low $30s.

The 2014 Impreza 2.5i Sedan is Subaru's most compact vehicle...rated at 36 highway miles per gallon...but it's quite roomy inside.  It is similar in size to a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic.  Imprezas start in the upper teens.

The 2014 Impreza 2.0i Hatchback is an Impreza 2.5i Sedan with
a hatch instead of a trunk.  Priced in the upper teens to low twenties.

The 2014 Impreza Sport is an Impreza 2.0i Wago
n with special 17-inch gunmetal grey alloys, roof rails, body color rocker spoilers, unique sport fabric, fog lights, and All Weather Package (heated seats, mirrors, wipers).  Priced in the low $20s.

The 2015 XV Crosstrek has the underpinnings of an Impreza 2.0i Sport (above), so it shares the Impreza's basic dimensions.  Subaru gave the Crosstrek unique bumpers and grill, aggressive 17-inch silver/black alloys, wheel arch cladding, black rocker spoilers, privacy glass, and a canine chauffeur.  With almost nine inches of ground clearance, think of it as a mini-monster truck that gets 34mpg highway.  It is the only Subaru available with a hybrid powertrain.  They are priced in the low to upper $20s.

The 2015 Legacy is a sedan built on the same platform as the Outback.  It is a full size car, comparable to a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, but with all wheel drive and the most interior room in its class.  With the 2.5 liter four cylinder engine, Legacy earns 36mpg on the highway and is also available with a 3.6 liter six cylinder engine.  Priced from the low $20s to the low $30s.

The 2015 WRX has a turbocharged, 2.0 liter, 268 horsepower engine, with a 0-60 time about 5 seconds.  Priced in the mid to upper $20s.

The 2015 STi offers 305 horsepower, 2.5 liter turbocharged engine, like a WRX with 'roid rage.  The STi reaches 60 mph a few tenths of a second quicker than the WRX.  Subaru's research shows that the lucky people who buy STi's would buy a WRX but they have approximately $8,000 more to afford the very top of the line. Priced in the mid to upper $30s, an STi is very rare, new and used.

The 2015 BRZ is Subaru's sports coupe.  The "B" stands for Boxer engine, the "R" stands for Rear wheel drive, and the "Z" stands for Zenith (as in the highest point of an astronomical object).   It is the only rear wheel drive vehicle in Subaru's line-up.  Available with a six speed manual or Subaru's first six speed automatic transmission, the BRZ won't lay rubber at the drag strip like a turbocharged WRX, but will thrill you in the corners.  Priced in the upper $20s.

The 2014 Tribeca is no longer produced, bowing out of production at the beginning of 2014.  (Subaru plans to offer a seven passenger vehicle in the future, but you'll have to wait a year or more.)  Tribeca rides on a stretched Outback platform, so in terms of proportions and road presence, it is like a tall Outback. Since 2008, it came standard with a 3.6 liter six cylinder engine.  Since 2010, it was available only in a seven passenger seating configuration, the only Subaru available this way.
