These pictures are the first look at the first ever BRZ tS model, limited to 500 units and available at Planet Subaru later than the other models, in April, 2018.  The first four pics were captured by one of Planet's team photographers, Max Youmans, at a regional meet. The tS is part of a pair of extreme performance models produced by Subaru for 2018...the other is the STi Type RA "Record Attempt."

The 2018 BRZ tS (tuned by STI) gives the purist sports car its most agile handling ever. This special performance variant, which will be limited to 500 units, is offered at $33,495 plus $860 for destination and delivery.

The BRZ tS takes full advantage of its light weight, ultra-low center of gravity and precision handling, adding quicker response to driver input, better control and increased stability. The upgrade adds STI-tuned front and rear SACHS® dampers and coil springs as well as an STI flexible V-brace in the engine compartment. New draw stiffeners are added to the chassis and sub-frame to improve steering response.

For the first time, BRZ is equipped with 18-inch wheels. The BRZ tS is fitted with lightweight STI wheels that are mounted with 215/40 R 18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires for superior grip and quicker turn-in. A high-performance braking system, using Brembo rotors, 4-piston front calipers and 2-piston rear calipers, enhances stopping power, fade resistance and pedal feel.

The BRZ tS exterior also adds a more aggressive look with an exclusive STI carbon fiber rear spoiler, which is manually adjustable to fine-tune rear downforce for track driving. The addition of STI front, rear and side underspoilers helps control airflow for better traction and stability. The tS will also be available in WR Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Silica and Crystal White Pearl.

The BRZ tS is adorned with the exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accent around the front grille and unique rear bumper cover. The official tS badge in chrome and red is displayed on the front grille and rear hatch. The exterior foldable mirrors, roof-mounted shark fin antenna, BRZ and SUBARU badging all have a black finish. The fog lights have been removed and replaced with unique fog light covers.

The cabin features black leather and Alcantara® upholstery with contrasting red stitching and accents throughout the interior including steering wheel; door and dash panels; knee pads; shifter and emergency brake boots; and visor over the gauge cluster. The front seats have red leather bolsters and the seatbacks are embroidered with the tS logo. The center console has been updated to a cast black finish. The BRZ tS also comes standard with red front seat belts and a frameless interior rearview mirror.

The 2018 tS receives the latest generation SUBARU STARLINK 7.0" Multimedia Navigation system as standard, featuring a 7-inch high resolution touch screen with intuitive, high quality maps powered by TomTom®. This top of the line system offers voice activated controls and navigation; smartphone integration with Android™ Auto and Apple CarPlay™, Aha™ and Pandora®; and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with audio streaming. Also included is SiriusXM All-Access Radio along with SiriusXM Traffic® and Travel Link (subscription required).

A standard 4.2-in LCD multi-function display positioned next to the tachometer can show vehicle performance data including lateral Gs, accelerator pedal position, braking force, steering angle, oil and coolant temperature, and battery voltage as well as an integrated stop watch for recording lap times.

Overview:
2018 BRZs are on sale now at Planet Subaru!  You can also order a 2018 Subaru BRZ from Planet Subaru, which is the best way to get your BRZ because the units available are extremely limited.

2018 Changes:

  • Price increases only $100;
  • All BRZ models now include Welcome Lighting which provides better nighttime visibility when approaching or exiting the vehicle;
  • Automatic headlight activation when wipers are turned on;
  • One-one touch lane changer turn signal. Both manual and automatic models receive a high-grade leather shift handle as standard equipment.
Changes are relatively few because Subaru made tons of improvements on the 2017 version.  The laws of economics dictate that low-volume models get updated less frequently than the top sellers (e.g. Forester and Outback).  Subaru imports BRZs in boutique quantities...Subaru annually sells over 500,000 vehicles in the United States and only a few thousand of them are BRZs. 

Here's a summary of the changes they made it last year to keep the car fresh and competitive:

  • ENGINE:  2.0-liter Boxer receives internal friction reduction improvments including new valves, camshaft and cylinder heads.  And with a new aluminum intake manifold and redesigned exhaust manifold for increased air flow, engine output in manual models increases to 205-hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. 
  • GEARING:  Lower final drive ratio from 4.1 to 4.3:1, paired with the standard Torsen® limited-slip differential, improves acceleration on models with manual transmission.
  • SUSPENSION:  2017 BRZ receives updated coil springs and dampers as well as a larger rear stabilizer bar.  Additional reinforcements to the chassis were added to the strut tower braces, transmission cross-member plate and the rear wheel housings to increase BRZ's rigidity.  The stability control system thresholds are raised to further improve handing..."Sport" mode becomes "Track" mode.
  • STYLING:  2017 BRZ sports new wheels, front fascia, rear garnish, fender garnish, and LED headlight and taillight modules.
  • INTERIOR:  2017 BRZ gets steering wheel infotainment controls for the first time, and available 4.2-in LCD multifunction display near the tach which displays lateral Gs, accelerator pedal position, braking force, steering angle, oil and water temperature, battery voltage, and an integrated stop watch for recording lap times.
  • UPGRADES:  2017 BRZ offers optional Performance Package on the Limited model with the manual transmission and includes Brembo® calipers and larger rotors on both front and rear brakes, boosting stopping power, fade resistance, and pedal feel.  SACHS® Performance shock absorbers are added to all four corners for improved ride and corning stability.  Also included in the package are unique 17-in x 7.5-in black aluminum alloy wheels. 

Don't hold your breath waiting for a convertible option, or a hybrid powerplant, or four-doors.  Planet Subaru "built" a composting BRZ but there is only one of those!  (Actually, there isn't even one).  Subaru got us excited with a BRZ STi concept powered by a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine, but alas, it was just a concept.  Read more about that car here.

The BRZ, which received significant enhancements to styling and performance for 2017, gains comfort and convenience upgrades for 2018 to complement its fundamental sports car driving experience. The model line starts with the BRZ Premium priced at $25,595, an increase of only $100 from the 2017 model year.

The Subaru BRZ, renowned for its ultra-low center of gravity and precision handling, is powered by a 205 hp, 2.0-liter SUBARU BOXER® engine, six-speed close-ratio manual transmission and TORSEN® limited-slip differential (optional automatic transmission model has 200 hp). The BRZ is designed with 2+2 seating and fold-down rear seatback to give the coupe everyday practicality and comfort. All BRZ models now include Welcome Lighting which provides better nighttime visibility when approaching or exiting the vehicle; automatic headlight activation when wipers are turned on; and one touch lane changer turn signal. Both manual and automatic models receive a high-grade leather shift handle as standard equipment.

Performance Package
Subaru offers a Performance Package for drivers who demand even more from a sports car. The Performance Package is available on the Limited trim with the manual transmission. The brake system is upgraded to Brembo® four-piston calipers and rotors on the front and dual- piston calipers and rotors on the rear. SACHS® Performance shock absorbers are added to all four corners for improved ride and corning stability. Also included in the package are unique 17- in x 7.5-in black aluminum alloy wheels. The BRZ Performance Package is well-priced at just $1,195.

Two Trim Levels: Premium and Limited
Subaru offers the 2018 BRZ in Premium and Limited trims. The Subaru tradition of outstanding value is evident in both trim levels with their long list of standard amenities including LED headlights; power door locks, mirrors and windows with auto-up/down feature; and remote keyless entry. Inside the BRZ, black upholstery with contrasting red stitching is adorned throughout the cabin including leather-trimmed door panels, center dash, shifter boot and parking brake lever. The leather-wrapped steering wheel comes standard with control switches for audio, cruise control and Bluetooth®. Both trims also receive Incline Start Assist which holds the vehicle momentarily in position while the driver accelerates to prevent roll back on an incline.

A key feature for the Premium is the comprehensive infotainment configuration anchored by the SUBARU STARLINK™ 6.2" Multimedia system that includes 6.2-in. high resolution multi-function touch screen display, AM/FM stereo and HD Radio®, Single-disc in-dash CD player with 8 speakers. The standard multimedia system offers smartphone integration with Pandora®, Aha®, iHeart® Radio and Stitcher™, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming. Also included is SiriusXM® All-Access Radio (subscription required) and a rear vision camera.

With a price starting at $28,445, the Limited adds LED fog lights, dual-zone automatic climate control and Keyless Access with Push-Button Start. Front seats on the Limited models are upholstered with Alcantara® inserts and leather bolsters, and the standard dual-mode heated front seats feature the BRZ logo embroidered in red on the seatbacks. A full security system in the Limited augments the Premium model's standard engine immobilizer. The Limited models also offer an illuminating vanity mirror on both driver and passenger visors as well as front door courtesy lights as standard equipment.

The 2018 Limited models receive the latest generation SUBARU STARLINK™ 7.0" Multimedia Navigation system as standard, featuring a 7-in. high resolution touch screen with intuitive, high quality maps created by TomTom.
