Subaru introduced an all new Forester for the 2025 model year, including a Hybrid version with an arrival several months after the first round of models, so other than some additional Eyesight features (read more below) there aren't changes in 2026 on the trim levels already available. However, we are getting an all-new 2026 Forester Wilderness model! For the 2025 model year, Subaru has been selling the previous-generation Wilderness model alongside the next-generation models of all the other trims. The rough-and-ready Wilderness model, first introduced for the 2022 model year, is moving to the next-generation Forester platform for the 2026 model year.

Highlights:
- New 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness debuts, the most rugged Forester yet
- Emergency Lane Keep Assist now available on all models equipped with Blind-Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

The
sixth-generation Forester continues to build on its successful debut
last year, and is joined by the new 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness, the
most rugged Forester Wilderness yet. The sixth-generation Forester SUV
starts at $29,995 MSRP.
The 2026 Subaru Forester is available in six trim levels: Base, Premium,
Sport, Limited, Touring, and Wilderness. All are equipped with Subaru
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the latest generation of award-winning
Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. The Forester's standard 8.7
inches of ground clearance gives the SUV impressive capability, while an
available Subaru 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus System with wireless Apple
CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility offers added comfort and
convenience. The new 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness features an
impressive 9.3 inches of ground clearance - taller than its predecessor -
and offers true off-road capabilities thanks to key upgrades to take
adventure further beyond the trail.
The Subaru Forester and Forester Wilderness are powered by a revised
2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER® engine that makes 180 horsepower and 178
pound-feet of torque available at a lower RPM for responsiveness,
compared to the previous generation of Forester. All Foresters utilize a
Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
The new 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness uses a revised Lineartronic®
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with a shorter final drive
ratio for better low-speed off-road capability paired with advanced
X-MODE® Dual Mode System with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes for
added confidence. A revised Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system,
shared with the sixth-generation Forester, offers faster center
differential lockup and reduced wheelspin when off-roading, and
incorporates steering angle data for better stability at turn-in and
cornering on higher-speed roads. The 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness is
equipped with standard 235mm all-terrain tires, wider than the outgoing
generation, for more confidence off-road. All 2026 Foresters utilize the
Subaru Global Platform, which has been strengthened to deliver 10%
stiffer torsional rigidity compared to the previous generation Subaru
Forester.
The new 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness also offers improved approach,
departure, and breakover angles, compared to the rest of the
sixth-generation Forester lineup. The approach angle has been extended
to 23.5 degrees compared to 19 degrees; ramp breakover improves up to 21
degrees compared to 19.6 degrees; and the departure angle edges up to
25.5 degrees compared to 24.6 degrees. An uprated transmission cooler
offers an increased towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, the highest towing
capacity ever offered on a Subaru Forester.
Standard on every 2026 Forester, the latest version of EyeSight® is
designed to operate more smoothly and quickly, and in a broader range of
conditions. That is due in part to a wider field of view, updated
control software, and the addition of an electric brake booster.
EyeSight® can identify cyclists and pedestrians at intersections sooner
and, when necessary, alert the driver and apply braking to avoid
collisions. Additional available safety features include Reverse
Automatic Braking, Blind-Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert,
Automatic Emergency Steering, and Emergency Lane Keep Assist.
Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection can stop the SUV if it
detects an unresponsive driver when the Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control
is active. The system will stop the SUV, activate hazard lights, and
unlock the doors. Subaru Connected Services can then call emergency
services for help.
All 2026 Foresters have a Rear Seat Reminder that can alert drivers to
check the rear seat for occupants or pets to prevent trapping them alone
in the vehicle.
Automatic Emergency Steering and Emergency Lane Keep Assist are equipped
on all models with Blind-Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
Automatic Emergency Steering can help drivers avoid collisions with
objects within their lane of travel at speeds of 50 mph or slower, while
Emergency Lane Keep Assist works with EyeSight® and Blind-Spot
Detection to assist with steering control depending on traffic in
adjacent lanes to help avoid crashes when merging at speeds between
approximately 37 and 90 mph. An available Surround-View Monitor offers a
bird's-eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings to better maneuver
the Forester into parking spaces.

These are the changes that Subaru has made to prior Foresters.
![]() 2025 and newer | Subaru stiffened the chassis by 10% to improve ride and handling, further refined the award-hogging Eyesight
driver assistance technology, installed an 11.6" infotainment system
with wireless CarPlay/AndroidAuto capability, and even added a kick
sensor for the rear tailgate. |
![]() 2019 through 2024 | The
first Forester built on Subaru's "Global Platform," handling agility
improves and cabin noise decreases. It's Subaru's safest-ever Forester,
loaded with technology including first-in-its-class DriverFocus, a driver-distraction mitigation system. Eyesight active safety suite is standard. Horsepower increases to 182 and fuel economy lifts to 33mpg highway. |
![]() 2014 through 2018 | Slightly larger inside and out than the generation it replaces, Introducing a continuously variable transmission lifted fuel economy to 32 mpg from 27. Other new features include the Eyesight driver assistance system, power tailgate, and X-Mode traction control. Outward visibility remains tops in the industry. |
![]() 2009 through 2013 | Prior Foresters felt a little cramped, but sales took off with this larger Forester, bigger than its predecessor in every dimension. Subaru poured on the technology, with standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and six airbags. Optional equipment included touchscreen navigation and Bluetooth. |
![]() 2003 through 2008 | Size remained the same, but Subaru modernized everything. Side air bags became standard on every model, the interior moved upscale, ride quality improved, and appearance moved from utilitarian to stylish. |
![]() 1998 through 2002 | Subaru created the Forester on the Impreza platform, installing a square body and bigger engine. Along with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V (both introduced in 1997), Subaru pioneered the "Small Crossover" segment. It combined the ride height, style, and versatility of a truck-based SUV without the poor fuel economy and sloppy handling. |
